What will replace it?
It was an impossible ideal, one that levels societies and destroys culture by mandating a forced, unnatural equality in this world, but not before the Lord. Pagans and the world are increasingly turning it back on it. But their “solutions” are equally unworkable. Women are mistreated, and families are not being encouraged. Only Christianity has the truth of marriage within the truth of Christ’s husbandly care for the Church.
The external roles we have ordered around marriage are divine but only temporary. Our worth and dignity do not come from worldly power or works, but from the justification proclaimed in the forgiveness of sins. Mother and father are divine roles—that cannot be accurately judged from a purely fleshly vantage point.
Pagans increasingly denounce feminism, realizing it was always unworkable, but the replacement doctrines of man-made origin are not better. But why do pagans condemn feminism more than Christians who actually have the truth? Bare power and force do not promote love and care for the weaker sex, so Christianity has a necessary role to play. We must be blunt about God’s order and how He has made us to function in marriage and in society.
Men are made to lead and dominate the world around them, since they are given dominion of creation, along with women. But men are to lead in love and care for their wives as their own flesh. This is a spiritual and divine reality. But outside of Christ, there is no true knowledge of love. So the Gospel is necessary, as is also the purpose and order of marriage according to Christ’s design.
Children are the fruit of marriage. Devaluing women does not promote marriage or the family. Rather, the unity and cohesion of the one-flesh union as God’s work is the message that needs to be professed. Any other solution, in the church or outside of the church, is untenable. –ed.
